A Fraction of Faith and Mighty Mountain

After the disciples could not cast a demon out of a boy, Jesus does. Matthew’s account picks up in 17:19…

19Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;[d] for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”[e]

Mustard seeds are beyond small. It is estimated that a 100-count aspirin bottle can hold nearly 200,000 mustard seeds. Yet, one of those tiny seeds can grow into a 10-foot bush in 90 days! Talk about a high yield! And that’s exactly what Jesus was talking about. A little faith goes a long way. It can move mountains.

The disciples failed on this occasion, but we know that they were successful on others. This gives us hope that, despite past or present “faith failures,” they are not fatal or final. We don’t have to surrender to the circumstances that stand in our way. You and I can walk up to the mountain, not in our own power, but in our faith in God’s power to overcome it. Patience and time may be required, but those are trust-building elements of relationship to God. Welcome them.

A prayer…

God our Father, the mountain of my circumstances in a certain matter seems so big, but I know you are far bigger, far stronger. Be the source of my faith and strength to face and move that mountain. Take my tiny seed-sized faith and grow it through your power, wisdom, and guidance. Thank you for the confident assurance that nothing is impossible with You. Amen.
